Our Origins

Since its inception in 1963 under the Directorship of Sir Laurence Olivier, England's National Theater of Great Britain has presented nearly 500 plays, and several different productions can be seen in any one-week in the London facility. Directors of the Royal National Theatre have been Sir Peter Hall, Sir Richard Eyre from 1988 to 1997, Trevor Nunn from 1997 to 2003 and Nicholas Hytner who took over in April 2003.

Under new artistic director Nicholas Hytner, the National Theatre of Great Britain is hotter than ever, prompting Time Magazine to write, "Hytner's first season was an almost endless string of popular and critical successes."

The National Theatre is central to creative life in the UK. In its three theatres on the South Bank of London, it presents an eclectic mix of new plays and classics constantly aiming to re-energize the great traditions of the British stage and to expand the horizons of the audiences and artists alike.

It is time to experience these sensational productions in New York.

Arriving in New York

April 2004 marked the arrival of National Theater New York (NTNY), a special three-year arrangement by Broadway producers Bob Boyett and Bill Haber. NTNY is a unique new series bringing the hottest hits from the National Theatre of Great Britain to Broadway. Haber, a co-founder of Creative Artists Agency, and Boyett, of Miller-Boyett, a prolific television producer, have both had very successful careers in Hollywood and are making their mark on Broadway, having produced the Pulitzer Prize winning Topdog/Underdog and Tony Award/Pulitzer Prize winning Best Play, Proof.

NTNY's inaugural production, Jumpers by Tom Stoppard, garnered rave reviews as well as four Tony Awards including Best Revival of a Play.
